The Future of GRESB Assessments – A Shared Vision

A Shared Vision: Creating a Five-Year Roadmap for GRESB Standards and Assessments

Transitioning to a more sustainable world is a fundamental challenge that we must face together.

As global decarbonization efforts accelerate and the importance of ESG integration continues to evolve, it is imperative that our industry comes together to create a shared vision of the future. A vision that clarifies our stakeholder needs, priorities and expectations and guides the development of GRESB Standards and Assessments into the future.

Since its inception in 2009, GRESB has served as a valued resource for the real estate sector – and for the infrastructure sector since 2015. Being an industry-led organization means that we put the voice and priorities of our members and partners at the forefront of our work. Now, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment in which it is crucial that we hear from you, our members and partners, so we can proactively map out our future together.

Over the next year and a half, we will seek your input and collaboration as we work with all industry stakeholders to create a five-year roadmap for the GRESB Standards and Assessments. Reviewed and endorsed by representatives of the industry who sit on the GRESB Interim Foundation Council (the precursor to what will become the GRESB Foundation Board), this 18-month stakeholder engagement process will be divided into three distinct phases:

  1. Defining our shared vision for the future
  2. Creating a strategy to achieve our vision
  3. Developing a five-year roadmap that defines future work and major milestones

Creating and following this roadmap will help ensure that GRESB Standards and Assessments continue to provide value as they evolve into the future, while remaining globally relevant for all our members and partners.

The Standards – the criteria by which ESG performance is measured – will be governed by the newly created GRESB Foundation, while the assessments of that performance (including validation, scoring and benchmarking) will be managed by GRESB BV.

The timeline, which can be accessed here, starts with a member and partner survey that we will share with you soon. This process is not set in stone, as content discussions may generate the need for additional rounds of feedback from you. As such, we will remain flexible and will update the timeline if additional feedback loops are added.

This stakeholder engagement process is intended to give all our members and partners the opportunity to take an active role in the development of our vision, the strategy to achieve the vision and the five-year roadmap – allowing the GRESB team to reflect on both your initial input and feedback at each stage of the process.

We look forward to working closely with you in the coming months. Thank you for joining us on this journey.
