Emergency stockpile for the potential natural disaster

Purpose of the project

We have stockpiled emergency supplies to enhance resilience against natural disasters, such as earthquakes and typhoons, in twelve of our directly managed assets, which in total account for 17% by floor space. The supplies include water, foods, blankets, and medical kits. We have prepared them to accommodate those who have difficulty in returning home.

 Approach

We followed the guidelines issued on September 10, 2012 by the Council for the Alleviation of Subterranean Urban Earthquake Commuter Distress in preparing for the stock. The stockpiles are for the employees and visitors in the facilities and those who enter to the facilities for evacuation. We have calculated and stocked the necessary amount of water, foods, blankets and other items for those people to survive for three days. In choosing items we paid attention to usability and evacuee wellness rather than just cost. E.g., we have stocked 500mL water bottles instead of 2L, because they are easier to distribute and carry. The 2L bottles need less space for storage but we thought actual usability is more important. Also, we tried to have the variety in food supply. We store not just only biscuit but also rice porridge or canned bread, hoping it would make meal time a bit more enjoyable under stressed circumstance.

 Results

We believe our retail facilities exist not only for tenant employees but also for local community. We run periodical emergency drills to train our tenant employees so that they can serve better in the real life situation to secure safety. Employees in our facilities have higher awareness of their roles as community members and are well prepared to provide the resilience to the community.

"JRF considers it is very important to contribute to local communities and society and is willing to take a principal role to improve resilience of local communities. We have implemented measures against natural disasters as well as conducted daily operation to provide our customers with safety while they enjoy shopping."
