The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) of South Africa is Africa’s largest pension fund with more than 1.2 million active members and nearly USD120bn in assets under management. GEPF’s Responsible Investment Policy commits GEPF to transparency, integrity and accountability in the way GEPF invests in all asset classes on behalf of its members and pensioners, including real estate investments, all of which are core values underpinning the GRESB initiative.

John Oliphant, GEPF’s Principal Officer and Head: Investment and Actuarial, explained GEPF’s decision to become a member of GRESB: “GEPF is proud to join other leading institutional investors in supporting GRESB. GEPF, as a significant investor in South African property is of the view that integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues within property investments can deliver better risk-adjusted returns through improved energy, water and other resource efficiencies across GEPF’s property portfolio. GEPF looks forward to working with GRESB and its property partners to benchmark South African property portfolios against GRESB for the first time in 2013.”

We look forward to working with GEPF over the course of the 2013 Survey year and beyond.
